What is a Freedom of Information Request (FOI)?

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 provides right of access to a range of recorded information that public authorities hold. Public Authorities include government departments, local authorities, the NHS, state schools or police forces.

What information can I ask for?

You can ask for documents such as policies, procedures, business plans, figures or strategies. The Act does not give people access to their own personal information. If you want access to information held about you, you should make a Subject Access Request.

How do I make a Freedom of Information request?

Anyone, anywhere in the world, can make a Freedom of Information request. You can ask for information in different ways such as, by email, post or by filling in an online form.
